Port Authority will add trips and make other adjustments to several bus routes this month in an effort to ease crowding.
The changes are relatively minor in scope and will be followed by more improvements later this year, made possible by increased transit aid in Act 89, the state's new transportation funding law, authority spokeswoman Heather Pharo said Wednesday. The next round of changes will come in June.
About 30 routes will see changes effective with the start of service March 16.
On four routes -- 71A Negley, 71B Highland Park, 71C Point Breeze and 71D Hamilton -- weekday service frequency will be increased from 7 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. and reduced from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. to better meet demand.
Weekday service on the 51 Carrick route will increase from every 10 minutes to every 8 minutes between 7:20 a.m. and 8 a.m.
Two weekday round trips will be added to P1 East Busway-All Stops between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Three inbound and four outbound midday trips on the 53 Homestead Park route will be converted to 53L Homestead Park Limited trips, extending service to Greenfield, South Oakland and Downtown Pittsburgh.
Stops will be added near the 31st Street Bridge on 1 Freeport Road and 2 Mount Royal routes.
On the 61D Murray, weekday afternoon short outbound trips from Oakland to Greenfield will be shifted to later in the day, running between 4:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
An early-afternoon outbound trip will be added to the Y1 Large Flyer.
Routing of the P69 Trafford Flyer will change at the request of Trafford officials.
Other routes with schedule changes are 14 Ohio Valley; 16 Brighton; 17 Shadeland; 19L Emsworth Limited; 26 Chartiers; 27 Fairywood; 29 Robinson; 31 Bridgeville; 61A North Braddock; 61B Braddock-Swissvale; 61C McKeesport-Homestead; 67 Monroeville; 75 Ellsworth; and G31 Bridgeville Flyer.
