Some land-line phone users may have noticed an outage this morning, but the problem has been fixed.

Verizon reported an outage affecting 5,000 of its customers in the 412 area code at about 4:50 a.m., said Alvin Henderson, chief of the Allegheny County Department of Emergency Services .

The outage affected customers with numbers starting with the area code 412, and continuing with the three-digit exchanges of 819, 881, 882, 884, 885 and 886.

People with the affected phone numbers could call each other, but were unable to call outside those exchanges, including making an emergency call to 911 if need be.

The reason for the outage was a problem with a trunk line, Mr. Henderson said.

The outage did not affect cell phones.

The problem has now been fixed. Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs sent out a news release at 7:16 a.m., announcing that all customers were returned to full service.

Mr. Henderson said there were zero complaints stemming from the outage.
