Pittsburgh police were on the scene of a reported eight-vehicle chain reaction crash on icy Bigelow Boulevard this morning.
The crash occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. near Frank Curto Park. Police were shutting down the road. There was no immediate report about injuries.
Earlier there were at least two other crashes on Bigelow as falling temperatures and light bursts of snow caused the road to ice over.
"Quiet" was the word echoed earlier this morning from emergency dispatchers as they assessed the condition of roadways throughout the region.
Except for a couple of minor mishaps involving collisions with a meter and a hydrant in Armstrong and Butler counties, respectively, dispatchers reported that all was quiet in the lull that followed an evening snowstorm Saturday.
"So far, so good,'' said a dispatcher for the Pennsylvania State Police at Findlay, which patrols highways in Allegheny County.
"Quiet," said an emergency dispatch supervisor for the Allegheny County 911 center. Dispatchers from Westmoreland, Washington, and Beaver counties said the same.
Things were tricky during the early evening hours Saturday when a storm moving through the region put down a blanket of snow. Road crews were able to keep pace with the event, though.
