Woman killed after bus and car crash in Indiana County

A woman died after a small bus collided with a car this morning in Indiana County, according to Pennsylvania State police.

State police collision reconstruction investigators will investigate, but preliminary reports indicate the bus ran a red light and struck the side of a Lexus LS450, state police in Indiana County said. The bus was affiliated with SeniorLIFE center in Ebensburg, Cambria County, Trooper John Matchik said.

The three bus passengers and driver of the Lexus were transported to hospitals after the crash, state police said.

Sandra Livingston, 70, of Homer City, had been ejected from the bus and was flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital, where she died at 12:14 p.m., authorities said.

Also on the bus, Grace Renwick, 76, was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center, and Cathryn Reeger, 79, was flown to Memorial Medical Center, state police said. Mark Fox, a spokesman for SeniorLIFE, could not elaborate on injuries they sustained, but said their "medical conditions were already compromised" somewhat.

Frank Fazio, Jr., 77, who was driving the car, was also taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center.

The driver of the bus, Michael Smith, 20, of Nanty Glo, was not injured in the crash, state police said.

Mr. Fox said the driver has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. He said Mr. Smith had a "meticulous" driving record when he was hired about a month ago.

He added that the company's thoughts and prayers are with their families.

The first call for the crash, which occurred in White, was received about 9:47 a.m.

Trooper Matchik said the bus was going southbound through Ben Franklin Road and Shelly Drive when it collided with the car, which was going eastbound through the intersection.
