The Port Authority will revive a Mon Valley bus route eliminated more than two years ago as part of a wave of service reductions.

The former 55 Jefferson route will be reborn as the 55 Glassport line starting Sept. 1. It will operate between Century Square in West Mifflin and the North Versailles Walmart, with service to the West Mifflin Walmart, Southland Shopping Center, Community College of Allegheny's South Campus, Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Clairton, Glassport, McKeesport (including the Port Authority's Transportation Center), UPMC McKeesport, Port Perry and Great Valley Shopping Center.

Buses will run seven days a week, once an hour.

Uncertainty over the future of Heritage WorkLink service to that area "became a community-wide concern" that caused the Port Authority to restore the route. Congress eliminated WorkLink's funding source, threatening about 13,000 free rides per month to residents of seven communities. WorkLink is for now operating with supplemental funding from the state of Pennsylvania.

Amy Schnarrenberger, development director for Heritage, said the service is funded through Aug. 31 and will continue to be needed to take people to the new Port Authority route.

"We are delighted that the Port Authority is recognizing the need in the Mon Valley," she said.

Discussions are under way about whether and how the WorkLink service will operate after this month, she said.

Minor schedule changes will occur on 15 other Port Authority bus routes on Sept. 1.
