The second annual Schaab Memorial Softball Tournament scheduled for today has been moved to Aug. 4.

Organizers said recent rains left the field too wet and muddy for play and would present a safety hazard.

Friends of Michael Schaab, the 25-year-old geriatric therapist killed in the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic shooting in March 2012, organized the first charity softball tournament last year at Penn Township Municipal Park in Harrison City to honor him and his sister, who also died from gun violence.

Proceeds will fund a scholarship for a local high school student to attend the University of Pittsburgh and benefit other local charities, including the Animal Rescue League, The Blackburn Center, the Penn Trafford Recreation Commission and the Penn Trafford Athletic Association.

Schaab played softball regularly with high school friends, the same group planning the event, and was the softball captain on a Pittsburgh Sports League team.
