A Democrat state lawmaker is calling on suspended Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin to resign over her conviction on campaign corruption charges.

State Rep. Brandon Neuman, of Washington County, said today that he is prepared to file a petition to start the impeachment process in the state House if she doesn't resign immediately.

The justice was convicted Thursday of using her former Superior Court staff, and the Senate staff of her sister, former state Sen. Jane Orie, to work on her 2003 and 2009 campaigns for the Supreme Court.

Justice Melvin won a 10-year term on the court in 2009, but the court has been divided politically and ideologically -- with three Democrats and three Republicans -- since she was suspended without pay by the Court of Judicial Discipline in August.
