Residents of the 400 block of Fourth Avenue in New Kensington called police about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday after hearing gunshots outside their homes.
According to New Kensington police Chief Thomas Klawinsky, police arrived to find a man shot dead inside a car, and a woman across the street also shot dead.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims, but family members identified the man as John Russ, 43, of New Kensington, to KDKA-TV.
Russ’ ex-wife, Heather Cline, told KDKA that he had two sons and that the attack appeared to be an ambush.
She said that the woman involved was his girlfriend, was in her early 20s and had three children of her own.
The Westmoreland County coroner’s office said the identities of the victims would probably be released today.
Russ has a lengthy criminal record, with numerous felony convictions on charges such as possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture or deliver, burglary and receiving stolen property.
Witnesses told KDKA that they saw a man running from the scene with his head covered to disguise his identity.
According to a woman who lives a few doors down from the scene of the shooting and preferred to remain anonymous, there were six gunshots in total — three, then a short pause, then another three.
