An elderly Venango County man was critically injured Saturday evening when he was struck by a minivan while sitting on the front porch of his home. Police believe the driver of the vehicle was under the influence.
Pennsylvania state police in Franklin said the accident happened at 6:20 p.m. on Route 8 in Sandycreek, Venango County.
Critically injured was Richard B. Mong, 83.
Police said Michael L. Nearhoof, 42, of Kennerdale, was southbound on Route 8 when he lost control of his vehicle near West View Drive. The vehicle hit a guardrail then traveled through a yard, struck a business sign, then careened back through the yard sideways until the vehicle struck the front of the home and porch at 1658 Pittsburgh Road (Route 8.)
Police said Mr. Mong, who was sitting on a chair on the front porch, suffered “major injuries” to his chest and head and was transported by medical helicopter to UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Police said criminal charges are pending against Mr. Nearhoof pending results of lab analysis of his blood.
