17-year-old boy drowns in Slippery Rock Creek

A 17-year-old boy drowned ​Sunday afternoon ​​​in Slippery Rock Creek​, Lawrence County, state police ​said.

​John Wayne Durnell, of Ellwood City, was swimming with a friend in the Slippery Rock Township creek when he tried to swim across and was pulled underwater by the strong currents, police said.

Fire and EMS units ​went ​to the scene around 4:30​ p.m.​ Dive teams from Lawrence County and New Castle's fire department recovered the teen's body several hours later.
