A 13-year-old McCandless boy died today at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC after he was injured in a zip lining accident Sunday, a spokesman for the Allegheny County medical examiner's office said.

Rex Smith was taken by medical helicopter to the hospital after he was injured around 4 p.m. Sunday at a friend's house on Poor Richards Lane in McCandless. The zip line, from which a person hangs by a handle or harness and slides, was homemade and suspended between two trees, the spokesman said. He was injured when a fastener in the ground came undone and hit him in the back of the head.

The boy died at 2:36 p.m. today of blunt force trauma to the head, and his death has been ruled an accident, the spokesman said.
