Springdale's council president died Thursday after a battle with cancer, the borough's mayor said.

Mayor Kenneth Lloyd said council President David E. Finley served on council since 2009, was a church lector and a longtime Penn State University football fan.

"Dave and I could disagree, and then we knew we would always be friends," the mayor said.

Mr. Finley served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, according to his obituary.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Charles B. Jarvie Funeral Home in Springdale. A veterans service is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday.
