There will be no gas drilling in North Park.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald who was among the speakers Dec. 10 at a public meeting about the multi-use trail on North Park Lake surprised the audience with his off-topic remark that he is "not interested in fracking in North Park."

Mr. Fitzgerald has proposed drilling beneath Deer Lakes Park — a proposal that has angered many county residents. Under the proposal, Mr. Fitzgerald has said no well pads would be built within the park, with drillers instead setting up shop along the perimeter and boring horizontally under ground.

Deer Lakes Park, is where energy company Range Resources has leased much of the surrounding property..

But while addressing the North Park group, Mr. Fitzgerald said there would be no drilling there..

“His comment came out of the blue,” said Ted Popovich of Ben Avon after the meeting. “It was as though he was having a Q&A with himself on whether there was a plan to frack in North Park. He said there was no plan to frack in North Park. Can we believe him?”
