An Armstrong County man died Wednesday morning trying to save his dogs from his burning home, state police said.
Terry Verner, 43, of Plumcreek, escaped the fire at his residence in Plumcreek then went back inside to rescue his dogs shortly before 2 a.m., state police said.
He was unable to get out a second time, state police said.
According to the county coroner’s office, Mr. Verner was found inside the front door and died of smoke inhalation. The manner of death was accidental.
The state fire marshal’s office is investigating. Mr. Verner was known to have a wood burner inside the home, police said.
