Families were allowed to return to their homes around noon today after emergency officials in Lawrence County had evacuated a residential block in New Castle due to a gas leak this morning.

The leak at the intersection of East Fairmont and Delaware avenues was reported about 9:30 a.m. after crews working nearby hit a gas line, said Jeff Parish, deputy director of the county’s public safety department.

No injuries were reported, and the situation was cleared by noon, a Lawrence County Emergency dispatch supervisor said.
