The northbound lanes of Route 28 are closed today at the 31st Street Bridge, scheduled to re-open at 5 p.m. tonight.

Work crews are removing remaining sections of the old roadway and repaving it.

The work will not affect the southbound lanes, PennDOT said.

Northbound traffic is being detoured across the 31st Street Bridge to Penn Avenue then to Butler Street, across the 40th Street Bridge and back to Route 28 north at Millvale.

The 31st Street Bridge is closed to traffic from Penn Avenue and River Avenue until Route 28 re-opens. Police officers and barriers are being utilized to prevent motorists from accessing the bridge from these roadways.

The work is part of the $36.4 million fourth phase of Route 28 improvements.
