Deer Lakes

A safety forum for comments and ideas will be sponsored by the district at 7 p.m. today in the high school library, 163 East Union Road, West Deer, to discuss what has been done and what is being planned to ensure student safety.

Fox Chapel

Employers who are interested in hiring students for the summer as well as representatives of summer programs, camps, internships, and higher education institutions can register their organization for the spring job and opportunities fair May 1 in the high school.

The fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. will feature representatives from various companies and schools who can provide employment and/or educational and volunteer opportunities for students. All students in grades 9-12 will attend the fair.

Businesses are invited to participate and business leaders are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to discuss their businesses with the students as well as meet potential employees or volunteers.

Mars Area

The Primary Center will offer a kindergarten preview day with a scavenger hunt, a library read-aloud program and a school bus ride from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. on March 1.

The event is for children and their parents who will be registering to attend kindergarten for 2013-2014. school year and their parents.

Registration packets will be available for pick-up during the event. Information: 724-625-1588.

• Events are scheduled each day next week in observance of Read Across America Week celebration of reading and literacy:

• Monday - "Fox in Sox" day - Students may wear crazy socks to school. Joe Wos, cartoonist and storyteller, will perform at 9:45 and 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Tuesday - "Oh the Places We Will Go" day - Students may wear a shirt from someplace they have been. Students will also join in "Laughter & Literacy Day" activities to learn about different authors and illustrators.

Wednesday - "Wacky Wednesday" - Students may wear their shirts backwards. Bruce Richards, former Mars Area teacher and storyteller, will perform at 9:45 and 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

Feb. 28 - "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" Day - Students may wear their favorite color or number. All students will join in field trips to Mars Area Public Library throughout the day.

March 1 - "I Love to Read" Day - All students are encouraged to wear red. Each student will receive an "I Love to Read at Mars PC" t-shirt to take home.

• A mandatory information meeting for cheerleading tryouts for 2013-2014 will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the high school gymnasium.

All students must be accompanied by a parent. Cheerleading tryout practices will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday in the gymnasium. Practices for tryouts are mandatory.

Tryouts will be held Feb. 28. Times will be announced at tryout practices.

North Allegheny

Students at Carson Middle School were evacuated Tuesday for the second time in two months after repair work on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the Central Administration Offices triggered a fire alarm at approximately 10:45 a.m.

The administration offices and the connected middle school were evacuated briefly.

Highland Volunteer Fire Department responded to the alarm, and determined that the repair work generated dust, which triggered the alarm. There was no fire.

The fire department cleared the building for re-entry at 11 a.m. and middle school classes resumed.

Students and staff at Carson were evacuated to the intermediate high school Dec. 20 in response to a written bomb threat that was found in a boy's bathroom. The building was found and nothing was found.

• Parents and residents are invited to attend a coffee meeting with Superintendent Raymond Gualtieri at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday in Ingomar Elementary School, 602 W. Ingomar Road.

North Hills

Senior high school student potters and cooks will showcase their items and help those in need during the sixth annual Empty Bowls event at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 during curriculum night in the high school cafeteria B, 53 Rochester Road, Ross.

Tickets are $10, which includes a choice of soups, bread and rolls as well as a handcrafted soup bowl, all created by North Hills students. Proceeds will benefit North Hills Community Outreach.

Advanced and beginning pottery students in art teacher Jason Hillegas' classes created more than 200 glazed soup bowls. Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 worked during class on the bowls, and students as well as alumni volunteered their time after school to work on the service project.

Quaker Valley

The deadline is April 30 for nominations for the Sports Hall of Fame class of 2013.

Following 10 years of inactivity, the QV Sports Hall of Fame was reinstated in 2012. The Class of 2012 included two coaches, four athletes and one team. The plans for 2013 will revolve around another weekend celebration connecting all Quaker Valley athletes, past and present.

The inductees will be announced June 1 and the induction ceremony will be during the Second Annual Hall of Fame weekend Sept. 20-22, which will feature a varsity football game on Sept. 20 and the Hall of Fame induction banquet on Sept. 22 in the Sewickley Heights Golf Club.

St. Sebastian

Prospective students and their families are invited to an open house from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Sebastian School, 307 Siebert Road, Ross. Babysitting will be provided. Pre-registration is requested, but not required.

Visitors can meet the principal, Kathleen Roppa, teachers, parents and students. The Catholic school offers half-day classes for 3-year-olds, half-day and full-day kindergarten classes, half-day classes for 4-year-olds and new next year are full-day, 4-year-old preschool classes.

After-school and before-school care, including a hot breakfast program, also is available. A brief presentation will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by personal tours.

Shaler Area

The district has announced its kindergarten registration for children who will be 5 years old by Aug. 31.

Registration sessions will be held in each school. Families should attend the school their child will attend. To find out the school, call the transportation office, 412-492-1200.

Registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on March 4 at Burchfield Primary, 1500 Burchfield Road; on March 5 at Rogers Primary, 705 Scott Ave.; on March 6 at Marzolf Primary, 101 Marzolf Road; on March 7 at Jeffery Primary, 201 Wetzel Road; and on March 8 at Reserve Primary, 2107 Lonsdale Road.
