City Council voted this week to designate the former Garden Theatre in the Central North Side as a historic structure, following the recommendations of the Historic Review Commission and the Planning Commission.

The former porn theater was closed in February 2007 after the Urban Redevelopment Authority bought the property for $1 million. It is one of a dozen properties the URA has spent a decade assembling along the North Avenue and Federal Street corridors for redevelopment.

Development decisions have been delayed so that a study, still pending, could be completed by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. URA officials say they expect the study to begin this spring.
