Penn Hills school transportation director resigns

Last year, transportation problems plagued the Penn Hills school district as missed bus runs caused problems for teachers, students and parents. In the spring, school directors fired former transportation company First Student and hired A.J. Myers Co.

In spite of changing transportation companies, the first day of school was marred by late buses throughout the district. By the day’s end, transportation director Allen Ayers submitted his resignation.

“It broke my heart to see so many things fall apart this morning,” school board president Denise Graham-Shealey said at the school board meeting last night. “ I take it personally and offer my personal apologies. We know we have a problem and we know we have to fix it. We will be looking for a replacement immediately.”

Mr. Ayers was hired in August 2013 at an annual salary of $50,000. According to superintendent Thomas Washington, Mr. Ayers has indicated he will stay on until September 5th. Mr. Washington said the district is exploring options to replace Mr. Ayers as soon as possible.
