A father and son were killed in a crash early this morning on Route 981 in East Huntingdon.
William Ray Leighty Jr., 53, of Scottdale, and his son William Ray Leighty III, 29, of Connellsville, were thrown from the Chevrolet Avalanche they were riding in when a Ford Ranger struck them at the intersection of Route 981 and Ruffsdale Alverton Road around 4:30 a.m., according to the Westmoreland County coroner's office.
The younger man was taken to Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant, where he was pronounced dead. The elder Mr. Leighty died at the scene. The coroner's office said neither man was wearing a seat belt.
The Ranger driver, Robert William VanDyke, 61, of East Huntingdon, was not injured.
Autopsies are scheduled for today.
