The North Versailles commissioners on Thursday night voted to advertise a new “safety and fire protection” policy.
As part of the policy, firefighters from Green Valley, a substation of the Fire Department of North Versailles, will no longer be called out.
Until now, FDNV had two votes, one for Green Valley and one for its main station; and West Wilmerding and Crestas Terrace fire departments voting as a bloc had two votes, when it came to determining who got state fire relief funding.
If Green Valley is no longer a fire company, West Wilmerding and Crestas Terrace will control the fire relief fund money by a two to one vote, a township official said.
Under the new policy, those with felonies on their records within the last five years would not be allowed to serve as firefighters.
A previous, stricter suggested policy wouldn’t have allowed anyone with a second-degree misdemeanor on his or her record within the last five years to be a firefighter.
A provision stating that damaged protective fire gear should not be used in emergencies, and should be repaired or destroyed, was removed from the policy, as were a number of fire safety training requirements.
