A loaded gun found in the backpack of a 6-year-old Monroeville boy Wednesday was not registered to his mother, police Chief Doug Cole said today.

Investigators are using gun registration databases to determine who owns the .45-caliber handgun, which was turned over to authorities after the discovery at Ramsey Elementary School.

Stephanie Lynn Marie Roth, 32, is charged with recklessly endangering another person, endangering the welfare of a child and possession of drug paraphernalia, all misdemeanors, stemming from the incident. An attorney was not listed for her Friday in court records.

She told police that the evening before her son found the gun, “several associates” known to deal drugs and carry weapons were sitting at a table next to the boy’s backpack in her apartment while she was in a back room, according to a criminal complaint.

Police said after finding the gun, the child immediately notified his kindergarten teacher, who then contacted authorities.

Chief Cole said Thursday that the investigation continues, and it’s possible that more people could be charged.
