The man shot and killed early this morning by Pittsburgh police has been identified as Adrian Williams, 29.
Williams was pronounced dead at 3:19 a.m. at Ross Street and Trenton Avenue, the Allegheny County medical examiner's office said.
Williams was shot after refusing to pull over during a traffic stop, according to police.
The incident began in the 6500 block of Hamilton Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office.
The vehicle crashed at the intersection of Penn and Trenton avenues. A man, armed with a handgun, got out and tried to run, police said, according to KDKA-TV.
Officers told the man to drop the weapon several times, but he refused, police said. He then turned, faced officers with the weapon in his hand, police said, the TV station reported.
Pittsburgh public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler referred all questions to Allegheny County police, who are leading the investigation and were not available.
Ms. Toler briefed TV stations early this morning but declined to answer questions later in the day because the county police had assumed jurisdiction, she said.
"I can't discuss it now," Ms. Toler said.
