A deputy coroner in Somerset County was killed in a crash police blamed on icy roads while he drove to a funeral home to assist his boss with a service.

Somerset County Deputy Coroner James Hahn,73, died about 9:25 a.m. Wednesday at the scene of the accident on Water Level Road in Milford..

State police said a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old male slid into the path of Mr. Hahn’s vehicle. Neither driver was wearing a seat belt and the teen, whose name has not been released by police, suffered moderate injuries and was treated at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center..

Mr. Hahn retired as a Somerset Borough policeman in 2005 and soon after went to work at Miller Funeral Home, which is owned by Coroner Wallace Miller. Mr. Miller eventually hired Mr. Hahn as a deputy coroner.

Mr. Miller said Mr. Hahn “was a wonderful person ... like a brother to me.”
