A Penn Hills man died after he was shot Thursday night shortly after he left a Giant Eagle where had an "encounter" with a man, Allegheny County police said.
Police said Jamar Hawkins, 31, and his girlfriend went to the Giant Eagle on Rodi Road to shop for food Thursday night. While there, Mr. Hawkins "had an encounter with another male," Lt. Andrew Schurman said in a press release. The lieutenant did not go into further detail about that part of the night.
Mr. Hawkins, his girlfriend and his brother drove away, and someone opened fire while they were near the intersection of Saltsburg and Leechburg roads about 10:15 p.m., Lt. Schurman said. Mr. Hawkins' girlfriend drove him straight to UPMC East Hospital, where he died at 11:11 p.m.
Neither Mr. Hawkins' girlfriend nor his brother were injured, the lieutenant said.
Officials said they found some "ballistic evidence" at the crime scene.
According to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office, Mr. Hawkins died of gunshot wounds to the head, torso and "multiple extremities."
Allegheny County police asked anyone with information to call the homicide unit at 412-473-1300.
