A Wilkinsburg man was charged Monday in U.S. District Court with possession of a gun by a convicted felon after Allegheny County probation officers said they found him carrying a gun and drugs on June 27 in the Paul Court neighborhood of Wilkinsburg.

Alfred Collier was charged in a complaint brought by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

ATF said probation officers spotted Mr. Collier and another man in a car in the Paul Court area, the scene of frequent shootings and drug dealing.

After the men gave consent for a search, the officers saw a gun sticking out of Mr. Collier's pants as he climbed out of the car. They also said they found crack cocaine and 20 stamp bags of heroin in his pockets.

Mr. Collier has a lengthy criminal history and was on state parole for a drug conviction.

Under federal law, felons can't have guns, and the Justice Department has made prosecuting them for that offense a priority.
