Veteran opposes checkpoints

I could not be more proud of the three North Huntingdon commissioners who stand against abusive checkpoints. I believe, as they do, that a nation that is willing to give up its freedoms for what it believes is safety will pay a terrible price for this fear. The four commissioners who voted for checkpoints should be ashamed of their lack of knowledge of world history. The people of North Huntingdon, and every other town, need to wake up and be thankful for the freedoms won for us.

At the doors to the town house stands a monument, a tribute to all who fought in the wars to preserve America's liberties. If having checkpoints is more important than what is on that monument, then commissioners may want to consider moving it to where people can read and understand its meaning.

I personally believe the North Huntingdon police should be insulted by this attack against their ability to do their job. This is one of the finest police forces in Pennsylvania. I have no fear living here and I do not hear a public outcry against the way the police are doing their job or an outcry for them to step up their interrogations of innocent civilians. I don't know if the cop on the street is for or against checkpoints, but it's their rights as well that are being impugned by the commissioners' desire to usurp our freedoms.

By the way, I am a non-drinker, don't do drugs, non-texter and a lucky to be alive in America, Vietnam veteran. My heart breaks for all veterans when I see they might now bear witness and perhaps be caught up in this abuse of power.

JOHN B. GRETZ
