A Duquesne man who authorities said was released from prison in January was shot and killed Friday night in a McKeesport park during a family gathering.
Mario Berry, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene at Renziehausen Park at 11:58 p.m., two minutes after the shooting call came into 911, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at the park's main pavilion.
An autopsy showed that Mr. Berry died from gunshot wounds of the head and trunk, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.
Mr. Berry was convicted in 1995 of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy and recklessly endangering another person. He was sent to prison for at least 10 to 20 years, according to court records, though details of his sentence could not be confirmed.
McKeesport's police chief was not available to comment. Allegheny County police did not return phone calls.
McKeesport has endured a bloody summer. In a two-week stretch at the end of June and beginning of this month, five people were shot.
"Look, there's violence all around us in the whole Mon Valley and you don't know when something like this is going to happen," McKeesport Councilman Darryl Segina said Saturday. "I hate it. We've had vigils, we've had rallies. I don't know what more you can do."neigh_east
