A Monroeville man awaiting trial on charges that he sexually assaulted a mentally challenged teenager was charged Tuesday with possessing hundreds of images of child pornography.

Detectives from the Allegheny County police department and the district attorney's office said they found more than 200 photos and videos of young girls exposing their genitals on computer equipment taken from the home of Alex Pimpinella, 24, when he was arrested in January.

County police arrested Mr. Pimpinella, who is being held in the Allegheny County Jail, six months ago on charges of rape, sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault.

An 18-year-old woman who is diagnosed with "limited cognitive abilities" told police a man who contacted her via MySpace visited her at her Castle Shannon home and forced her to have sex with him against her will at least twice, according to a criminal complaint supporting the arrest of Mr. Pimpinella.

All of those charges, except for one, were dismissed because of an "evidentiary issue," said Mike Manko, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

Mr. Pimpinella faces a July 10 trial for one count of sexual assault in that case. He faces a preliminary hearing for the child porn charges on July 3.
