A group of local volunteers is organizing another free bus trip for World War II veterans to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The Oct. 4 trip, the latest in a series offered since 2006 by a committee called World War II Memorial Vets Trip, will leave at 6 a.m. and return the same day at about 9 p.m. Boxed lunches, dinners and beverages are provided, and wheelchairs are available. Two nurses travel on each bus.
Departure points are at Ross Park Mall, Monroeville and Green Tree in Allegheny County and Beaver in Beaver County.
Since 2006, the volunteer committee has chartered 26 buses to take more than 1,100 veterans to see the memorial for free.
Each trip costs about $2,600, paid for with donations.
Any veteran interested in going should call 724-709-3614. Seating on the buses is reserved only for veterans of World War II, not their families or friends. Anyone wishing to donate to the trips can make a check payable to: WWII Memorial Vets Trip, Kingsway Engineering, 1331 State Ave., Coraopolis, PA 15108.
