Wilkinsburg police arrested the mother of a 2-year-old boy Thursday after a man found the child crying and alone in a tipped-over stroller, police said.
The man found the boy on the 700 block of Wilkinsburg's North Avenue at about 12:30 p.m. The boy was checked by EMS personnel and did not appear to be injured, police said.
Police arrested the boy's mother, Sharay Johnson, shortly after they found the boy, when Ms. Johnson arrived at the police station looking for her child. Ms. Johnson was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The boy was placed in Allegheny County Children Youth and Family Services custody.
According to police, Ms. Johnson said she had taken the boy to a relative's home so the relative could watch him. She told police that she left the stroller on the sidewalk in front of the home and called the relative to let them know the boy was there.
"For some reason the family member did not come out promptly," Wilkinsburg police wrote in a news release.
Ms. Johnson was taken to the Allegheny County Jail Thursday afternoon to be arraigned.
