The University of Pittsburgh is embarking on a renovation of the 17th-floor laboratory of the Thomas E. Starzl Biomedical Science Tower.

The property and facilities committee of the board of trustees today approved spending nearly $3.5 million for the first step, which will modernize the lab space, enhance collaboration among researchers in the School of Medicine's Department of Cardiology and help recruit and retain faculty. The lab was built in 1989.

The project is expected to be done during 2015. No additional steps have been reviewed.
