Just before a man was gunned down in a housing complex last week, two men with guns in their waistbands approached a group playing basketball, and one of them said, "If you ain't from Northview, you gotta die," a criminal complaint states.
Paul Kendrick, 19, of Northview Heights, known as "Peanut," is wanted on homicide and conspiracy charges, court records show. Police said Mr. Kendrick fatally shot Maurice Freeman, 21, of Northview Heights just after 1 a.m. August 1.
A criminal complaint filed today said Mr. Freeman and friends had just finished playing basketball when the two men with pistols approached the group and asked to play. One of the men in the group agreed to play a one-on-one game.
The group then left the court, but a short time later heard 10 to 12 shots from two different guns, police said. Mr. Freeman yelled out and then was seen on the ground in the 100 block of Hazlett Street. Police said the two men were seen running from the area.
Mr. Freeman was shot multiple times, police said. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition and later died.
Police said witnesses identified Mr. Kendrick through photos as one of the two men who had approached the group.
Following Mr. Freeman's death and another fatal shooting near the housing complex days earlier, the police bureau authorized overtime for some officers and coordinated with the housing authority to increase security there.
