Pittsburgh Police have arrested a suspect in the fatal stabbing this morning in Fineview.
Investigators reported that Dereck Frye, 22, of the North Side was involved in an altercation with Michael Monroe, 43, when Mr. Frye was stabbed in the chest. Mr. Frye was pronounced dead at 5:57 a.m. today at the scene in the 1700 block of Belleau Drive.
Mr. Monroe was stopped by a Zone 3 officer while driving in Mt. Oliver Street late this afternoon. He was arrested and is currently being held in Allegheny County Jail.
According to the criminal complaint, Mr. Monroe's girlfriend reported the two had gotten into an argument after he came home from doing "jitney trips" early Sunday morning. After reportedly choking his girlfriend, Monroe left the bedroom and attacked her son, Mr. Frye.
He returned to the bedroom several minutes later carrying a bloody butcher knife, according to the complaint, and threatened his girlfriend. She managed to escape past him and found her son upstairs unresponsive.
Police recovered the butcher knife on the kitchen table at the apartment, the statement said. Mr. Monroe is being charged with criminal homicide, simple assault and terroristic threats.
Police issued a "Be On Look Out" alert for Mr. Monroe before his arrest.
