A long-delayed hotel project on the North Shore finally is rolling.

Massaro Corp., the general contractor, announced today that it began construction of 10-story, 135-room Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Federal Street at Cajou Way on Wednesday.

The hotel, being developed by Federal Street Hospitality Associates L.P., an affiliate of Kratsa Properties, has been on the drawing board since 2009. It has been the subject of repeated extensions granted by the Pittsburgh-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority, which owns the land.

In its release, Massaro said the 110,000-square-foot hotel is scheduled to be completed in August 2015. It will feature a giant canopy entrance, king and queen suites, an indoor swimming pool, fitness center and business center.

Because of the delays, Federal Street has agreed to contribute $31,500 to a fund used to maintain the North Shore riverfront park.
