Point Breeze man charged after trying to bring gun into courthouse

A Point Breeze man was charged today with attempting to take a gun into the Allegheny County Courthouse.

Golan Barak, 46, said he went to the courthouse about 9:45 a.m. today to pay for property purchased through a sheriff's auction. When he put his belongings through a scanner, a security officer spotted a 9 mm pistol and asked the sheriff's office for help, according to Allegheny County sheriff's Chief Deputy Kevin Kraus.

"I did not know I was not allowed to carry a gun [in the courthouse]," said Mr. Barak, who is from Israel and moved to Pittsburgh about five years ago. Mr. Barak said he did not see signs prohibiting him from carrying a weapon inside the building.

Sheriff's deputies charged Mr. Barak via summons with possessing a firearm in court. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 11.
