The Henry L. Hillman Foundation is making a $5 million gift to support the University of Pittsburgh’s Institute of Politics.

The institute’s biggest gift will be added to Pitt’s endowment so it can support in perpetuity the institute’s efforts to promote citizen engagement, create innovative approaches to public policy and spur social responsibility among students and community partners, the university said in a statement Thursday.

“We are deeply grateful for this exceptionally generous and very well-targeted gift, which will help secure the future of the institute,” Terry Miller, director of the Institute, said in a statement.
