The inbound Fort Pitt Tunnel will be closed overnight starting at 10 p.m. today, PennDOT announced.

Crews will remove a section of the suspended ceiling. Sagging of the ceiling caused emergency lane closures and an overnight closure March 14.

Work is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. The posted detour uses the West End Bypass and West Carson Street.

PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said the decision to close the tunnel was made because sections of ceiling over both lanes are affected. Also, the Penguins play at home Wednesday and the Pirates return for a Thursday game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
