A Pittsburgh firefighter was promoted Thursday to the rank of lieutenant.

Charles Lewis, 31, joined the bureau in February 2006 and graduated with the highest scores in his academy class, according to a news release. He has spent most of his time since then working out of a station in East Liberty.

Lt. Lewis is a third-generation firefighter. His father, also named Charles Lewis, retired from the fire bureau as a captain in 2005 after 30 years of service. His grandfather, also Charles Lewis, served as fire chief in the 1980s, and several other relatives have worked for the bureau as well.
