West Carson Street will be closed today from Stanhope Street in Esplen to the West End Circle during paving of damaged sections of the road, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced.
Huge potholes have formed on the only lane open to traffic during an ongoing $39 million reconstruction project. With no room to steer around them, drivers have slowed to a crawl, causing inbound backups during morning rush hours. Temporary cold patching of the road has not solved the problem.
The closure will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Several sections of the road will be repaved with hot asphalt, PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said. Traffic will be detoured via the McKees Rocks Bridge and Route 65.
