A 36-year-old man has been charged with beating the mother of his unborn child in Garfield this morning.
Dawontay Bates, who has addresses in both Garfield and the Bluff, is being held in the Allegheny County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Pittsburgh police were called to a home in the 5400 block of Rosetta Street about 4:30 a.m. today for a report that Bates beat his girlfriend, who is nine months pregnant with his child and has a "high-risk" pregnancy, according to a criminal complaint.
Police noted that the woman's face swelled as they spoke to her and that Bates' cousin reported that Bates struck him while he was trying to intervene to help the woman.
When the woman's aunt tried to call police, officers wrote, Bates said that if he went to jail he would be "coming back hard, and through the back door."
Bates faces charges of aggravated assault of an unborn child, simple assault, intimidation of a witness and terroristic threats.
Police wrote that there was also a bench warrant for Bates stemming from a case in which he was charged with simple assault and harassment "for threatening to kill his last girlfriend with a gun."
