A man who tried to thwart an armed robbery at a Spring Garden bar tonight was shot in the chest and is in critical condition, Pittsburgh police said.

At about 8:30 p.m., a man wearing a mask and carrying a handgun entered Parrotts Pub, and "it was apparent that he was going to commit an armed robbery," major crimes Lt. Kevin Kraus said.

A 21-year-old man playing pool by the door grabbed the man's arm in an attempt to disarm him and was shot, he said. The man was taken to Allegheny General Hospital. The suspect fled in a dark blue sedan northbound on Spring Garden Avenue, Lt. Kraus said.

The Pittsburgh robbery unit is investigating, and no suspects have been identified.
