A crash and rock slide on the inbound Parkway East caused major traffic problems this morning.

The crash about 7:30 a.m. near Bates Street kept the left lane blocked for nearly an hour. There were no reported injuries. At about the time the last damaged vehicle was moved, rocks and debris tumbled from a nearby hillside, blocking the right lane approaching Oakland.

Traffic backed up on the parkway from Oakland to beyond Churchill.

Many secondary routes that connect with the parkway also were snarled. Traffic backed up on Beechwood Boulevard, Browns Hill Road and across the Homestead Grays Bridge. South Braddock Avenue was jammed with drivers who were trying to escape the parkway tieup. Data from 511pa.com indicated that travel from Churchill to Downtown Pittsburgh on the parkway was taking more than an hour.

The highway reopened about 9:30 a.m.
