The Pittsburgh Public Schools board has entered into an agreement with A+ Schools for the education advocacy group to help engage parents from the Hazelwood neighborhood.

The board tonight voted on a memo of understanding to support the A+ Schools Parent Nation initiative.

The effort initially will focus on five schools attended by Hazelwood students: Pittsburgh Mifflin PreK-8, Minadeo PreK-5, Greenfield K-8, Montessori PreK-8 and Sterrett 6-8.

The memo notes that Parent Nation "seeks to recruit and establish parent-led teams to support schools in achieving their parent and family engagement goals and strengthen parent-school

partnerships with underrepresented parents or family members contributing to the improvement of school climate in schools."

The memo states that A+ Schools will provide training for parent/community team members that initially will include reading and understanding school data, knowing parents' rights, school budgeting, Title 1, orientation to volunteering and building a program to have an impact on school climate.

Additional schools may be added in future years.
