Twenty-seven recruits graduated from the Pittsburgh fire bureau's training academy today.

The graduation ceremony followed 32 weeks of training during which the recruits learned ways to fight fires, provide basic medical assistance, work with hazardous materials and complete other tasks.

Another class of 28 recruits is expected to graduate from the Highland Park training academy in November, according to a press release issued by the city. That will bring the total number of city firefighters to 618.
