Man shot and killed on Homewood street

A man was shot and killed shortly after 1 p.m. today at the corner of Murtland and Mt. Vernon streets in Homewood.

Police were called to the scene at 1:28 p.m. Augustus McClain, 36, of Plum was pronounced dead at 1:39 p.m., according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office.

A caller informed 911 dispatchers that he or she heard four shots and saw a black male running from a car parked on the corner.

Officers found Mr. McClain in the driver's seat of a blue 2013 Ford Escape. There were several gunshot wounds in his head, torso and arms.

Police transferred the man's body to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Investigators searched the Homewood neighborhood where the shooting occurred, but had trouble finding witnesses, Major Crimes Lt. Daniel Herrmann said.

A 911 caller described the shooter as a black male in a gray T-shirt and black shorts. The caller said the man had medium skin and short, cropped hair.
