A motorcyclist died tonight after colliding with an Allegheny General Hospital van in front of the hospital on the North Side.

Douglas Cotton, 41, of Homewood was headed east on East North Avenue as the van was making a left turn onto Sandusky Street around 6:30 p.m., authorities said.

The motorcycle struck the van in the intersection, Zone 1 Sgt. William English said.

"In terms of fault, there is none until the investigation is done," he said.

Mr. Cotton was taken to AGH, where he was pronounced dead at 6:52 p.m. in the emergency room, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office. An autopsy will be performed tomorrow.

No other injuries were reported, Sgt. English said.

Mr. Cotton often rode with friends, who call themselves the Independent Riders. Other riders said he was a hard-working, loving father.

"He was determined to make a better life for his kids," said Ron Smith of Rankin. "All he talked about was his son."
