It was a half-baked idea -- stealing free cake.

It was almost 1 p.m. today Market Square was abuzz. Hundreds of people were waiting in line for one of 10,000 free cakes from Buddy Valastro, star of TLC's "The Cake Boss."

That's when, police said 52-year-old William Davenport of the West End bypassed the line, stole four free cakes and then tried to run.

"This incident stirred the crowd causing alarm and great commotion from the hundreds of people who had been standing and waiting in the very long lines," police spokeswoman Diane Richard wrote in a news release. "It is reported that throughout the event officers had to separate people and quell fights in the lines from people who attempted to jump the line in front of those who had been waiting for hours to receive a cake."

In the end, Mr. Davenport, who was also wanted on a charge of receiving stolen property, told officers he was drunk and apologized for stealing the cakes, Ms. Richard said. He was charged with theft by unlawful taking and disorderly conduct was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
