A federal grand jury has charged a Turtle Creek man with escape, accusing him of leaving a Downtown Pittsburgh community corrections facility in December.
Christopher Rockwell, 39, escaped Dec. 27 from Renewal Inc. and did not return, according to the indictment.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh, Rockwell was sentenced Feb. 13, 2008 in the Southern District of Mississippi to 74 months in prison.
In 2012 he was transferred to Renewal to complete the sentence, according to the federal prosecutor's office.
He was charged with escape from federal custody.
A U.S. Marshals Service investigation lead to the indictment.
Convicts stay overnight and on weekends while working and getting counseling at community facilities like Renewal, a nonprofit.
These facilities are viewed as important parts of the correctional system because they act as a bridge between incarceration and freedom. Unsupervised time outside of the walls is part of the Renewal program.
Of the 23 escapes last year from community corrections facilities with which Allegheny County contracts, 12 were from Renewal.mobilehome - neigh_city - breaking - neigh_east - neigh_south
