A Sharpsburg man was charged today with attempted homicide after police said he shot a jitney driver in the leg, striking his femoral artery.

Joseph Parker, 22, was awaiting arraignment tonight and also faces charges of aggravated assault and a firearms violation.

Pittsburgh police who were called to the 200 block of Belleau Drive in Fineview shortly before 3 a.m. on Dec. 22 found David Calhoun bleeding from the leg near a blood-stained Toyota Rav 4. A doctor at Allegheny General Hospital later told police the bullet struck Mr. Calhoun's femoral artery and fractured his femur, injuries that were considered life-threatening.

Interviewed later that day, Mr. Calhoun told police that he was working as a jitney driver and picked up a man on Johnston Avenue in Glen Hazel. When they arrived at Belleau Drive, the man said "You know what time this is," cursed at Mr. Calhoun and then shot him in the leg, according to a criminal complaint.

Police had previously arrested Mr. Parker on charges that he robbed several people near Belleau Drive within an hour of the shooting.
